On screen, 1917 comprises a single continuous take of two hours of adrenaline-riddled tension. Never mind that it’s actually stitched together with seamless edits, the effect is of being down in the trenches as two WWI infantrymen fight to get a message across no-man’s land in time to save a battalion of 1,600 men. Dark mutterings about the video-gamification of history notwithstanding, it’s propulsive stuff from director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and awarded, lauded cinematographer Roger Deakins.
