Fanboy A: “The reason modern cinema sucks is they don’t make films like 2001 anymore. No one’s making ambitious sci-fi.” Fanboy B: “But Ad Astra.” A huge antimatter explosion sets astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) on a mission to the edge of the solar system in search of his missing-presumed-dead father (Tommy Lee Jones). It’s Apocalypse Now in space, with Jones as the ‘gone jungle’ Colonel Kurtz character. It’s also a bit Solaris, as McBride remembers his wife on Earth. And a tad A Space Odyssey as it searches for the deeper meaning of existence. It’s ambitious.
