What even is a Robert Zemeckis movie? The only real line you can draw through Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Death Becomes Her, Forrest Gump, Contact and unfortunate CG performance capture movies like The Polar Express and Beowulf is a relentless interest in riding the edge of film technology. This facelessness works for Back to the Future and its sequels. They don’t feel like Zemeckis movies so much as a perfect embodiment of the time they were made. Like the eighties manifested itself as a time-travelling lark and animated Michael J Fox as with its spirit of Reaganite optimism. What a classic.
