Director Panos Cosmatos broke big last year with Mandy. Or at least as big as you can break with an insane, surreal movie that’s like Hellraiser II meets Frank Frazetta starring Nicolas Cage. Beyond the Black Rainbow is his older, and maybe more interesting, debut. A lurid, dark hybrid of ‘80s sci-fi thrillers like Altered States with some the visual manner and melodramatic mood of giallo movies like Suspiria, told at a hypnotic tempo. It’s the story of a freaky institute trying to reconcile science and spirituality that goes some wild, wild places from there.
