“Young woman is an emotionally stunted mess with substance abuse issues” has become a trop, and like any trope it can be treated broadly (Amy Schumer) or with some depth (Phoebe Waller-Bridge). Brittany Runs a Marathon leans towards the latter. It’s the story of Brittany (Jillian Bell) uses training for the New York Marathon as the path on which she throws she pulls herself together. It’s 2019 and we want some happy endings and some laughs but we don’t want to be treated like fools. So good job, director Paul Downs Colaizzo.
