The Colour Out of Space is directed by Richard Stanley, who went from low-budget cyberpunk success Hardware to directing an adaptation of The Island of Dr Moreau starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer to getting fired a couple of days into shooting to being a near recluse ’til this, his comeback. In this, he collaborates with two kings of weird. One living: Nicolas Cage playing a family man losing his mind as an extraterrestrial organism turns his rural life into a nightmare dripping with unnatural colour. One dead: HP Lovecraft, who wrote the story upon which the film is based.
