When he was 21, and drunk, cartoonist John Callahan had a car accident that left him a quadriplegic. He went on to find sobriety and create some of his most beloved work. The title of his autobiography Will the Real John Callahan Please Stand Up? gives you a good idea of how black the guy liked his humour, and Gus Van Sant matches the surreal spirit and dry wit of Callahan’s cartoons in this biopic starring Joaquin Phoenix as Callahan and Jonah Hill (who keeps proving people should take his acting more seriously) as Callahan’s AA sponsor.
