You can be a Scorsese contrarian for sure. “The King of Comedy is his best movie” is a defensible position for instance. But when the dust settles, when we’ve done our “After Hours is underappreciated” dance, it’s Goodfellas. It was always Goodfellas. There’s not a wasted frame in the thing, the soundtrack slaps, Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci humanise monsters without valorising them (but real heads know Lorraine Bracco’s performance is where it’s at). Now go get your shinebox.
