Stephen King’s novel It is 1,138 pages long. Crazy. Things weren’t gonna get wrapped up in one movie, clearly. Pennywise the dancing clown returns to spook the the Loser’s Club except they’re all adults now. It teases at a lot of interesting threads – addiction, domestic violence, bigotry – but doesn’t forget that what we’re all here for are the Grand Guignol carnivalesque horror images and Bill Skarsgård’s characterisation of Pennywise—taking some of the camp from Tim Curry’s portrayal of the character in the miniseries and mixing it with an unsettling, ugly ferocity.
