The dark side of Hollywood, somewhere over the rainbow. Renée Zellweger takes the last year of actress Judy Garland’s tragic life and wrings a performance from it to make Oscar weep golden tears. Based on a play by Peter Quilter, Judy shows a fragile, drug-dependent Garland putting on a series of concerts in London so that she can raise coin to see her kids in the States. Flashbacks to her early life as a mistreated child star explain how we got here. But it’s Zellweger’s total embodiment of the role that knocks it out of the park.
