Unstoppable talent Greta Gerwig gives us a Little Women for our times. By playing with the chronology, the director lends weight to what the March sisters become as adults. This way, we see Jo (Saoirse Ronan from Lady Bird) as a working writer in New York. It’s a film of two halves: one of warmly lit girlhood memories and another of grownup compromises. Gerwig, who wrote the screenplay herself, has exploded the book’s narrative only to be truer to its essence: sisterhood and coming of age; nostalgia, loss and the price of female liberty. A new classic.
