Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, The Host, Okja) is on another level. At 50 we presume he still has a lot in the tank, but if Palm D’Or winner Parasite is his masterpiece, then his legacy is still secured. It’s the story of an immiserated family of opportunistic grifters who one-by-one fill service roles for a bourgeois family in a tony part of Seoul. Throughout, it seamlessly, masterfully switches gears from dark comedy to social satire to touching family drama to Hitchcockian thriller. Overall it seethes with anger at the ruling class and that’s what the world needs right now.
