Why the screaming? It’s because some rascal is running about wearing a spoopy mask and giving teens a touch over their recommended daily dose of stabbing. Wes Craven’s 1996 slasher classic made an entire genre turn a corner into self-awareness and referentiality. But first-year film studies essays aside, Scream still stands as a case study of how to make a horror film fun as well as scary. The haircuts, however, have not stood such a test of time.
