It’s hard to think of a director making a harder shift in tone between films than George Miller made between Happy Feet Two and Mad Max: Fury Road. But Luca Guadagnino is up there, following his dewy romance Call Me by Your Name with a reinterpretation of Dario Argento’s 1977 Italo horror classic Suspiria. Guadagnino’s version shares the superficial details of Argento’s original – dance academy as cover for a matriarchal coven of witches – but subs out his lurid colours and operatic feel for washed-out greys and bleak dread. The contemporary thinky-horror renaissance continues.
