Dickens’s A Christmas Carol is the stonest of cold classics and the Henson company tamped down their chaotic muppet energy a little to give their adaptation the gravitas it deserves. Michael Caine plays Scrooge as if he was, in his words, “working with the Royal Shakespeare Company … as if it is an utterly dramatic role and there are no puppets around me”. Gonzo narrates as Dickens, Rizzo is his comedic foil, Paul Williams does the songs. A truly touching version – one of the best.
