See it for Wallace Shawn. See it for Andre the Giant. See it for the one time Billy Crystal was funny. Most of all, see it for true love. There’s a reason why this apparently slight comedic fairy tale has been deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” by the US National Film Registry. Maybe because it’s that rare bird, a sentimental crowd-pleaser with a zinging script (from William Goldman, who wrote the original book) and a deep respect for its audience’s intelligence.
